Nitric Oxide Stimulating Dietary Supplements: Evidence for Effect
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Dietary supplements purported to increase nitric oxide production have gained enormous popularity within the athletic (e.g., bodybuilding) community in recent years. Although anecdotal reports suggest a potential benefit from using such products, the scientific evidence is sparse. To the knowledge of this author, only one ingredient consumed in oral form by human subjects has been reported within the scientific literature to promote an increase in blood nitric oxide. This ingredient is a unique form of L-carnitine called glycine propionyl-L-carnitine (GPLC). This article discusses the scientific evidence for nutritional supplements to increase nitric oxide production, as well as the physiological rationale as to why nitric oxide may be important related to athletic performance. Directions for future scientific work in this area of sport supplementation

Effects of nutritional supplements in healing of laparotomic dehiscences in obese patients with metabolic syndrome: a randomized prospective controlled study
Background Chronic venous insufficiency, infection, diabetes mellitus, excess malnutrition, exposure to pressure and shear, all conditions included in obesity, prolong the healing process. Moreover, a growing body of evidence clearly indicates that dietary supplementation or intravenous administration of Arg is beneficial in facilitating wound healing, enhancing insulin sensitivity, and maintai...
متن کاملComparison of Effect of Piperine and Capsaicin with Tabata Exercise on Changes in Serum Nitric Oxide and Creatine Kinase of Kung Fu Boys
Introduction: Tabata exercise programs can produce free radicals and muscle soreness and herbal supplements may be helpful as mediators in response to oxidative damage and muscle stress. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of these two supplements with Tabata exercise activity on nitric oxide and creatine kinase enzyme. Methods: The research was a quasi-experimental...
متن کاملEffects of inorganic and organic manganese supplementation on gonadotropin-releasing hormone-I and follicle-stimulating hormone expression and reproductive performance of broiler breeder hens.
Manganese is an essential microelement. Manganese deficiency affects reproduction performance and reproductive hormones in layers. However, little is known about its effects and the possible mechanism in regulating reproduction in broiler breeder hens. In the current study, broiler breeder hens at peak production were fed with diets supplemented with 0, 120, or 240 mg of Mn/kg as MnSO4 or Mn pr...
متن کاملPotential ergogenic effects of arginine and creatine supplementation.
The rationale for the use of nutritional supplements to enhance exercise capacity is based on the assumption that they will confer an ergogenic effect above and beyond that afforded by regular food ingestion alone. The proposed or advertised ergogenic effect of many supplements is based on a presumptive metabolic pathway and may not necessarily translate to quantifiable changes in a variable as...
متن کاملDietary flavonoids and nitrate: effects on nitric oxide and vascular function.
Emerging evidence highlights dietary flavonoids and nitrate as candidates that may explain at least part of the cardioprotective effect of a fruit and vegetable diet. Nitric oxide plays a pivotal role in cardiovascular health. Components of a fruit and vegetable diet that are cardioprotective, in part through effects on nitric oxide status, could substantially reduce the cardiovascular risk pro...
